Breast cancer typically begins when cells in the breast start growing in an abnormal way. The most common type of breast cancer is ductal carcinoma which begins in the cells of the milk ducts, lobules or other tissues of the breast which grow abnormally and affect different parts of the breast such as lymph nodes, lymph fluid and lymph vessels.


Signs and symptoms of breast cancer


Breast cancer includes various symptoms at different stages. A few signs and symptoms of breast cancer are mentioned below.


  • Change in the size and shape of one or both breasts

  • Inverted nipples

  • Lump or swelling in the breast and armpits

  • Bloody discharge from the nipples

  • Breast pain and tenderness

  • Redness over the breast

  • Orange-peel texture or dimpling on the skin of the breasts

Causes of breast cancer

The exact cause of breast cancer is unknown. Though, there are some certain factors which increase the risk of cancer, including:

  • Age

  • Family history of breast cancer

  • Smoking tobacco

  • Poor diet

  • Obesity

  • Lack of physical exercise

  • Consuming alcoholic beverages

  • Previous diagnosis of breast cancer

Types of breast cancer

There are different types of breast cancers that may develop in distinct parts of the breast, including

Invasive breast cancer

It is the most common kind of cancer which develops in the cells of the breast ducts. This kind of cancer spreads outside the breast

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)

In DCIS, a few cells in the lining of the breast start to become abnormal. These cells are kept inside the ducts to prevent their spread into the surrounding area of breast tissues. This kind of cancer is typically found during a mammogram.

Inflammatory breast cancer

This is rare kind of breast cancer. It happens when cancer cells block the lymphatic vessels in the skin that covers the breast which causes the breast looks red, swollen and inflamed.

Diagnosis

The breast cancer is diagnosed with several tests such as

  • Breast examination

  • X-Ray (Mammogram)

  • Needle biopsy

  • Breast ultrasound

  • Punch biopsy

  • Fine needle aspiration

  • Vacuum assisted biopsy

Treatment for breast cancer
